Interesting how you suggest this conflict would lead to more nuclear armament. In my view, an event like this would result in an emergency international summit where governments would recommit to nuclear non-proliferation and an international body with real power would be established to slowly reduce the arsenal of countries with nuclear weapons. In my opinion, the end scenario would be that 5 countries have nuclear weapons (Israel is forced to disclose and give up weapons, North Korea is punished properly for its program) with each country having only a few weapons. The devastation of a true nuclear war causes international agreement that nukes are overall a detriment to society.

Are either nation members of the Mutually Assured Destruction understanding? I doubt that either would attempt to burn the entire nation, so assuming a limited first strike by the Paks it would likely occur as far from Pakistan as feasible, the same logic  with India. A first strike would be thought out practically. Either would bank on getting a less-than-equal response. Mumbai might be flattened, and that will/should require Islamabad be hit, and we're off to the races. Kashmir would be the most likely, and a return might net an "If I can't have it, you won't"  reaction. In that case, everyone besides the Indians and Pakistanis might accept an "OK, we're even" kind of settlement.

But whomever strikes first will be a pariah everywhere.

I think the point where we might see people enter would be right before nuclear war. Noone is jumping in on two countries wiping each other out. But since noone has jumped in so far i dont think this will happen. 

Who do you think could escalate that? It‘s not a proxy war so i dont see why any country would nuke a fourth country in retaliation.

No one who reads readdit actually cares about what happens to India or Pakistan really. 

They only make South Asian hate memes and jokes and ask "Why are they still alive?" similar to what Churchill said 70+ years ago, "Why is Gandhi still alive?" And then they go back to real life concerned about how to pay their next bills.

This is how it plays out:

India nukes Pakistan.

Pakistan nukes back India.

In the meantime, learning that Pakistani military capability is kaput now, Israel sends a few (non nuclear) ballistic missiles to Pakistan to ensure its destruction.

Pakistan responds by sending them 2-3 of the last nukes they have left. MIRVs, not single warhead ones.

Before the military and political administration infrastructure (and high-ranking officials) in India get obliterated, India would be like "OK so Pakistan is mostly smoke now, and our social structure and organisation is going to be destroyed very soon. This means that in the coming 5-6 decades, China is going to be the undoubted champion in the region and will almost certainly expand its borders into us, or at least make sure that we don't return to current power status. We are going to suffer, but we will not leave China standing on its feet either!" India sends a few tactical nukes to Beijing.

China would be like "Oh, so they sent us nukes. Very well. Previously, only their government and social order was destroyed, now we will ensure that their production facilities are dust, too! Here goes the flying dragon!"

US, seizing the opportunity, immediately instructs Japan to initiate an offensive against China and also coaxes Taiwan into declaring independence. A panicked China, with government gone but all military facilities intact, immediately responds by nuking US bases in South Korea and Japan. Japan (as a country) gets rubbed out of the map. North Korea, getting desperate, nukes Seoul, apprehending a massive artillery offensive since China's political decision making leadership is now gone.

US, seeing their thousands of soldiers in Eastern theatre gone, responds by nuking China.

China responds by nuking US mainland and sending the entire North America into a frenzy.

Meanwhile UK and France, seeing a sneaky opportunity, push Ukraine for a massive offensive against Russia and also transport short range nuclear missiles to Ukraine.

Russia, instead of nuking Ukraine, instead nukes England and Paris.

That's how it plays out. No nuclear power would let other nuclear powers survive in case of their own destruction. It would be a domino effect.

Once the big toys get brought out, at this time, it isn't one little squabble we're worried about here.

Currently, we already have Russia and Ukraine. Now Iran and Israel. If India and Pakistan go at it again, you will have 3 major wars that mostly span an area half the size of the United States surrounded by powerful countries. They will egg each other on even if the wars stay separated until they don't. It will essentially become a 3 body problem.

Just like US uses israel to destabilise middle east, it uses Pakistan to destabilise south asia. If there is a war between US and Iran, Pakistan will be the first to backstab Iran.

Nuclear winter... We don't know. Maybe it's basically fine, but maybe there are long term cooling effects. The atmosphere is complex and the simulations carried out give different results depending on how the analysis is carried out.


In either case, though, we're not talking Frostpunk, everybody huddled around generators, snowball earth situation. But a couple of degrees, widespread crop failures, tens or hundreds of millions of people at increased risk of starvation.
